Streaming on Apple Hardware With an App Store Player
Apple devices only install apps from the App Store, so the player choice is narrower than on Android — but setup is straightforward and the same details work across your iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
Before you start
- An Apple TV (4th generation or newer), iPhone or iPad
- The activation details from your provider: server URL, username and password, or a playlist URL
- An Apple account to install from the App Store
Step-by-step
Open the App Store
On Apple TV, open the App Store from the home screen. On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store as usual.
Install a player
Search for a playlist-based player such as GSE Smart IPTV or iPlayTV and install it. Some are paid, which is a charge from the app developer rather than your provider.
Open the app and add a playlist
Look for Add playlist, Remote playlist or Xtream Codes, depending on the player.
Enter your details
Type the server URL, username and password, or paste the playlist URL supplied to you. Entering these on the iPhone first is far quicker than typing on the Apple TV remote.
Let the list load
The channel list downloads, followed by the programme guide where the player supports it.
Use AirPlay if you prefer
With the player set up on your iPhone or iPad, AirPlay sends the picture to an Apple TV or a compatible television without installing anything else.
Save your favourites
Mark the channels you watch most so they sit at the top of the list.
Tips that save time
- Typing long URLs with the Apple TV remote is painful. Set the playlist up on an iPhone, or use the iPhone keyboard prompt that appears when the Apple TV asks for text.
- AirPlay is convenient but adds a step between source and screen. A player installed directly on the Apple TV is steadier for long viewing.
- Apple TV models before the 4th generation cannot install apps at all and will not work for this.

Which Apple TV models are supported?
Apple TV 4th generation and newer, including Apple TV 4K. Earlier models have no App Store and cannot install a player.
Why are some players paid?
A few App Store players charge a one-off fee to their developer. That is unrelated to your subscription and is not something your provider receives.
Can I use the same details on iPhone and Apple TV at once?
The details are the same, but how many devices can stream simultaneously depends on your subscription. Check before relying on two screens at the same time.
